The day Kieran Scott decided to focus on food, in the late 1980s, he arranged some pasta, tomatoes and basil on a table and shot them from overhead. People thought he was mad, but he was just beginning to rewrite the rules of the genre. His work was soon picked up by premium magazines in Australasia and he started shooting pioneering features of his own design – winemakers dining at home, documentary-style with portraits and action, or a chef cooking on the beach – creating images full of energy and movement. Sought-after by major international magazines, he loves to shoot people engaged in reality and never tires of shooting food. He would be really happy if he could get to all his jobs on his Vespa.

What do I see? I see a kitchen area with vintage decor that I find very aesthetically pleasing
What camera and compositional techniques have been used? This is a candid shot with natural/ambient lighting and the rule of thirds technique is used in this shot as the end of the wok intersects the first vertical line of the rule of thirds grid and the pan next to the eggs is on the intersecting line of the rule of thirds grid.
How does this image make me feel? I really like the colours, so this image makes me feel, for lack of a better word, comfortable. I feel as though if I were cooking in this kitchen, it would be a very calm and enjoyable experience.
What ideas is this photographer working with? Perhaps the idea of complimentary colours with the turquoise and the soft orange of the wood and eggs. Also, the contrast of the black and white adds to the pleasing colour tones.

What do I see? A restaurant setting with people seated at the tables. I also see that the outside area is overexposed and the inside area is an array of shadows and rim lighting.
What camera and compositional techniques have been used? Rim lighting around the people, a multitude of shadows indoors, a fast shutter speed to capture the activity.
How does this image make me feel? It makes me feel like indoor, the temperature would be very cold because the people are in the shadows and out of the sunlight. I feel like that perhaps if I were in this setting, I would be the waiter based on where I am standing in the scene.
What ideas is this photographer working with? Definitely contrast; I also think Scott could be experimenting with rim lighting in this photograph and simultaneously candid photography.

What do I see? I see a man standing to the right of a white building and the photograph is slightly angled.
What camera and compositional techniques have been used? Contrast between the colour of the subject and the background. This is a low angle shot. Negative space has also been used because of the colour tones depicting contrasted negative space.
How does this image make me feel? I love this image. I really like the contrast used in the image and its very visually pleasing.
What ideas is this photographer working with? Scott is working with, again contrast as the main subject and the background both work nicely together in that way. Again, I feel as though he has perhaps staged this image, however if it were staged, I would expect the background to be straight rather than on an angle, so I think he is working with the idea of candid photography here.
