Term 2 - Week 2 - Digital Technology 2 - Evaluating Image (Book Artist Models)

Evaluating Images: Book Media Artist Models:
The following images are taken from the artist models books. They are recorded below:

1. (Book and Photographer) Nan Goldin: I'll Be Your Mirror

The image I am evaluating is the full page image on the right.

What do I see? I see a man looking out the window at a view of the ocean whist sitting at a table covered in a red table cloth.
What camera and compositional techniques have been used? Golden has photographed with great use of shadows and light. Complementary colours have been used to create a visually pleasing image. The outlines of the windows sit at the rule of thirds vertical grid lines - thus the use of the Rule of Thirds compositional technique.
How does this image make me feel? I think it's beautiful and it makes me feel very calm because of the water and its stillness and the mans posture and pose creating a very inquisitive and at-peace stature.
What ideas is this photographer working with? Goldin likes to capture people in their natural environments which is part of what drew me to her work in the first place; the unrefined nature of her photography. I suspect she is continuing with this theme and has capture this photograph candidly.

2. (Book and Photographer) Sally Mann: Immediate Family

What do I see? A black and white photograph of a young girl closing one eye.
What camera and compositional techniques have been used? A very narrow depth of field, as her head is the only thing that is in focus. Perhaps the use of symmetry but that has been spoiled by the closing of her right eye.
How does this image make me feel? I really like this image because it's one of Sally Manns photos that I felt comfortable looking at. I much prefer her portraits of her children in which they are fully clothed. This image makes me feel as though the innocence of children hasn't been completely destroyed just yet, which makes me very relieved and happy because it is such a delicate quality to preserve.
What ideas is this photographer working with? Perhaps the idea of natural beauty; but I can't be sure. She may have just taken the photograph to document her childs' growth.

(Book and Photographer) Imogen Cunningham (both)

What do I see? I see a young women on the street wearing a black t-shirt, a plaid shirt over that, with her hair out and giving a small smile to the camera.
What camera and compositional techniques have been used? This is street photography according to the photographer so I would say it's an aspect of documentary photography. As for the composition, aside from the colouring as black and white, the rule of thirds technique can be seen slightly as it seems the woman is dividing the background in to  two sections and she is the parting line.
How does this image make me feel? I've always liked street photography and have viewed it as a great form of documentation for the time and era in which people are in. This girl actually reminds me of one of my favourite singers, Tove Lo, which is why I chose this photograph to analyse.
What ideas is this photographer working with? This photograph is in black and white so I am assuming that Cunningham is working with the idea of documenting what she is seeing on the street and how what we see is a lot simpler than seeing the story behind each person. The black and white is to reflect the simplicity of sight, not the multitude of knowledge drawn from confusion and speech.
